He did not set out to become a star. One afternoon in 2009, alone in a rented studio in Abidjan, a young arranger placed his voice over one of his own beats — just to hear how it would sound. What happened next reverberated across West Africa and beyond. The Beynomania had begun.

A child of Yopougon
Guy Serge Beynaud Gnolou was born on September 19, 1987, in Yopougon — a vibrant, working-class district on the western edge of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. His father was a military officer; his mother, Clarisse, a teacher. Between them, they raised a boy who was quiet, studious, and humming with inner sound. At age seven, his father gave him a toy piano. He never put it down.
His self-taught mastery of arrangement began on the family computer and continued through Abidjan’s studios, where he learned the trade under the guidance of Touré Sound. When he sought work as an arranger, he was turned away by studio after studio. He briefly tried DJ-ing. He returned to what he loved most. Rejection did not break him — it sharpened him.

From arranger to icon
By the mid-2000s, Beynaud was arranging for prominent Ivorian artists including DJ Lewis, Molare, and DJ Arafat. His impeccable personal style earned him the nickname Le Mannequin des Arrangeurs — “The Model of the Arrangers.” In 2007, the legendary Douk Saga noticed him and invited him to collaborate. Then came 2009 and the song “Kouman Lébé” — a Malinké phrase meaning “the word is here.” It was an immediate sensation.
Signed to David Monsoh’s Obouo Music label, Beynaud released his debut album Seul Dieu in 2012. It sold out so quickly that stores ran out within weeks, eventually surpassing 50,000 physical copies. His Coupé-Décalé was different — more melodic, more warm, closer to the genre’s roots. At a time when many artists competed on noise and spectacle, Serge Beynaud competed on melody. He won.
David Monsoh, head of Obouo Music, put it plainly: “Serge Beynaud has melodies. He plays guitar, piano, and is a great arranger. Try making melodious Coupé-Décalé — so people can actually listen to it. He is an artist in progression who makes the genre proud.”Key milestones
A career in motion
- 2007: Begins building his own recording studio. Noticed by Douk Saga, a founding figure of Coupé-Décalé.
- 2009: Releases breakout single “Kouman Lébé.” Signs with Obouo Music. The Beynomania begins.
- 2012: Debut album Seul Dieu sells 50,000+ copies. Fills the 5,000-seat Palais de la Culture.
- 2015: “Fouinta Fouinte” reaches #1 on StarAfrica. First Coupé-Décalé artist to headline Palais de la Culture. Wins AFRIMA Award for Best Dance.
- 2016: Wins MTV Africa Music Award — Best Francophone Artist. Founds Star Factory Music label.
- 2018: Triumphant concert at Elysée Montmartre, Paris. Officially launches the Fondation Serge Beynaud.

More than a musician
Through Star Factory Music, Beynaud freed himself from major labels and built a platform for young African artists to reach international audiences. He launched a restaurant on the Route de Bassam, a transport business, and has spoken of building the largest restaurant chain on the continent. But his most enduring investment may be the Fondation Serge Beynaud — a professional training centre for young Ivorians facing social hardship, helping them find skills, purpose, and a place in the world.
He is shy offstage, incisive on it. He does not chase celebrity feuds. He dresses impeccably and speaks carefully. He is, in the words of those who know his world best, la douceur dans ce monde de brutes — the sweetness in a world of brutes. More than fifteen years after that afternoon in a rented studio, the melody is still playing.
